PRIDE wins ‘Little Gem’ Award

The Disley PRIDE group has been awarded the ‘Little Gem’ award by Cheshire Community Action for its Woddland Garden Project at St. Mary’s Church.

A triangle of land adjacent to St.Mary’s Church in Disley had become completely overgrown with brambles and nettles. Cheshire County Council announced in 2008 that this would be Cheshire Year of the Garden and the Disley Pride group were granted £250 for making the area into a woodland garden.

When work commenced it was found that soil on the site was solid clay, the brambles had to be ‘grubbed out’ and there were serious drainage problems. Lyme Park’s estates department came to the rescue for the drainage by laying a new pipe and repairing a drain supplying the well.  Stonework surrounding the well (which once supplied water to Disley Fountain) was restored by a volunteer.  Pride funded more cash for strimming the area and removing some dead trees and shrubs and then work commenced on planting. A request was then made for donations and over 50 people have given a tree or shrub or bulbs in memory of a loved one.

These dedications will be written in a special book in St.Mary’s and everyone will be given a plan of the site showing the trees and shrubs planted with a numbered tag.

A beautiful teak seat has been made by Stockport probation team and has been donated by Jane Rogers in memory of her parents John and Joan Turner.

Pride is very grateful to everyone who has played a part in this ambitious project and hope that Disley’s Little Gem will give pleasure for many years.

James would be delighted to hear from anyone who may remember him or can give him details of his classmates. He can be contacted on arcelia@optusnet.com.au

Disley Cyclist wins Gold at British Championships

Cyclist Hannah Walker, 18, of Hollinwood Road, has won gold in the Women’s Madison – a two person relay -at the  British National Track Championships held at the Manchester Velodrome  beating off competition from sportswomen who are competing in the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Hannah, (pictured on the left) who raced with team mate Hannah Barnes, 17, from Northampton, said: “I am really, really happy we won.

And Hannah was in good company for her first national title with Olympic champions Victoria Pendleton and Sir Chris Hoy also storming to victory on the first day of the competition.

The ex-Poynton High School student added: “It was a really good atmosphere, there was a big crowd and you got a big cheer when you were speeding for the finish. You could hear them all clapping and banging their boards – when you hear all that you just want to do even better.”

A former Disley Primary School pupil, Hannah became a serious contender for the track after she sustained an injury to her knees and was forced to stop running with Stockport Harriers.

She lives in Disley with her mum Christine, dad Eric, and younger brother Thomas, 15, and goes cycling around Cheshire for three hours, six days a week.

She has just finished studying sport and English literature at Cheadle and Marple College and wants to be a full time athlete, with her sights firmly set on the Olympic and world champion titles.

She said: “I just really enjoy getting out on the bike.

“I think I’ll be a bit young to go to the Oympics in 2012 but hopefully I will be able to go along to the 2016, that’s my aim.”

Hannah has been able to train thank to the support of her parents and the Youth Opportunities Fund, and is now looking for a sponsor.

If you can help, contact her on 07709 807519.
