News from Hannah Walker – Disley’s Cycling Champion

“I have recently just been to Belgium visiting my family and also did some racing out there. I came 14th in the road race: it was really technical with cobbled decents and small tight roads. Conditions weren’t helped by the torrential rain which started 5 minutes before the race and ended just as the race finished. So there were lots of crashes to avoid and concentration levels were very high. I then raced at Tywyn in Wales on the 30th July in a Womens National Series where I came 2nd, I then drove down to Abergavenny with my team mate for a road race the next day, 31st July. The racing was hard, lots of ups and downs, with a strong field of around 50 riders; it was going to be hard from the gun and it was. After 56miles of racing the steep uphill finish was insight, but with 750metres to go there was a gigantic crash with alot of riders coming down. I managed to get 3rd, but was a bit disappointed at the end as I was hoping to win this race. It was a good weekend though with a 2nd and 3rd so i cant complain. I am now looking to the track nationals which are at the end of September at Manchester Velodrome where hopefully I can gain some good results”

Good luck Hannah – Disley is proud of your achievements!

Disley’s First Well Dressing Festival – 18th & 19th June 2011

Well Dressing Programme

CLICK HERE TO SEE PICTURES OF THE WELL DRESSING WEEKEND

Congratulations to the PRIDE well dressing team who organised this very successful event which marked an important milestone in the village history. Many people enjoyed the festivities on Saturday 18th June and were enthralled to watch the Maypole dancing by Disley Primary School pupils and Morris dancing by Poynton Jemmers on the Ram Green. Two white ponies drawing a carriage brought the well-dressing Queen and her rosebud from Newtown to the Ram Green to be crowned by Lord Newton who was ably assisted by the Mayor of Cheshire East Mr.Roger West.
Glynn Williams in his report on this year’s well dressings for the Peak District said: “ Disley achieved a truly excellent result for a first attempt. The main dressing at a re-discovered well in an area of the Churchyard was designed by Peter Scott and showed the Fountain which was supplied with drinking water for many years by the well. Very striking colours were provided by hundreds of flower petals to make the main dressing a spectacular success. At the horse trough on Red Lane, New Mills & Marple Rotary Club provided a small dressing in the form of a Rotary wheel and on the Ram Green there were 6 small dressings by local schools and other groups. A well dressing CD with over 200 photographs can be purchased from Maia Photography (0161 483 2383) and there is a DVD showing the well dressing group at work from the first meeting in January available from Alan Buckel (765666) for £10 (proceeds to St.Mary’s Church Heritage Restoration Fund)

Local Service Delivery – Presentation Meeting

Thursday 9th June at 7.30pm in the Community Centre
In March 2010 Cllr. Wesley Fitzgerald, leader of Cheshire East Council, wrote to all Town & Parish Councils outlining the Cheshire East’s proposals to transfer some of its non-statutory services and assets such as Civic Halls to Town & Parish Councils from 1st April 2012. They are also proposing the devolution of statutory services, with funding, such as the cutting of grass verges, street sweeping from April 2013 providing that the service can be delivered cheaper and more efficiently locally.

The services/assets that Cheshire East want to transfer to Disley Parish Council are the Community Centre, provision of hanging baskets in the village centre, provision of Christmas trees and lights and transfer of the lease on the ‘Superloo’ on Station Approach.

Disley Parish Council is still negotiating on the amount of transitional funding that CE are making available for the transfer of the Community Centre but have agreed in principle to take over this vital community asset. The wide community consultation undertaken in 2009 to inform the Disley Parish Plan identified that the Centre was important to the community but was under used and need refurbishment and proactive management initiatives to attract more users. Disley Parish Council sees this as an opportunity to manage and use the centre more proactively and develop the centre to meet future community needs.

Please come along to the public meeting and presentation if you wish to learn more about Cheshire East’s proposals for local service delivery.

On Wednesday 20th April this much awaited new play area was opened by Cllr. Diana Thompson, Chairman of Disley Parish Council, and Mrs. Jane Liptrot, daugher of Arnold Rhodes after whom the park is named. Arnold’s grandchildren Sarah and Mark were also in attendance and Mark gave an excellent opening speech informing everyone of his grandfather’s many years of public service and in particular his contribution to youth facilities in the village.

It was a fun day for young and old alike.
